Can Antler Dog Chews Go Bad?

Can Antler Dog Chews Go Bad?

It’s a great question — and the answer is… kinda yes, kinda no. Let’s break it down.

So, do antlers go bad?

In some cases, yes. If an antler is left outside in the elements — especially in direct sun, moisture, or mud — it can get contaminated and technically go bad. This is especially true for split antlers, which expose the inner marrow and are more vulnerable to bacteria or mold if not stored properly.

But here’s the cool part...

Naturally shed antlers are incredibly durable and long-lasting. That’s why you’ll see antler mounts hanging in lodges for decades — they don’t really "expire" in the way a typical chew or treat might. When kept in the right conditions, antlers stay fresh and safe for your pup to gnaw on for a long time.

At Summit Dog Chews, freshness matters.

We cut our antlers to order — yep, every single one. It might take us a little longer to ship, but that extra step means your dog is getting the freshest possible antler chew. And trust us, dogs can tell the difference.

How long does an antler last once you have it?

Most dogs will enjoy their antler for weeks or even months. You’ll notice chew marks, but unless it’s been exposed to water, sun, or dirt, the antler itself should stay odor-free and stable.

However, if it starts to smell funky or look off — it’s probably time to toss it and treat your pup to a new one.

Quick Tips to Keep Your Antler in Good Shape:

  • Store it in a dry spot, away from direct sunlight.

  • Avoid leaving it outside — sprinklers and UV rays are not your chew’s friends.

  • I keep my dog’s antler in his toy basket in the living room. It keeps things tidy and turns every chew session into a fun little treasure hunt.

One last thing...

Always supervise your dog while chewing, and make sure to choose the right size and type of antler for their chewing style.
